new favorite tradition

I found this advent set at ToysRUs in a random moment of shopping before Thanksgiving. I had Playmobil as a kid (actually, my mom still has it at her house, a set of castle folks that is still in mint condition after 35 years and several generations of play) so I have a special place in my heart for it. I wish I had a special place in my wallet to buy more. Great Scott, that stuff is expensive! But this set was on sale and I thought it was something my kids might enjoy doing.

Understatement. They ADORE it. Thing 1 has even days and Thing 2 has odd days, and it is the first thing they ask me to do each morning. A typical morning conversation: (Me: Reaching to hug them.) "Good morning, girlies." (Them: Rushing through a perfunctory hug in which they barely close in) "GoodMorningCanWeDoThePlaymobilCalendar?"

I also have this Target mirrored advent box on the mantel I fell in love with and scored at the 50% off sale after Christmas two years ago, so they each get to do one calendar door a day. That one is filled with candy this year. But they are much less thrilled with the candy then the slowly expanding Playmobil woodland scene. Gotta love that.

I confess I play with the woodland set when they are not looking. It is really cute. I have pondered many times doing a handmade countdown calendar one year, but motivation is low when I already have these two. Check out this one by talented Katie of So Happy. It's gorgeous.

While I'm throwing out links, if you are pondering making some felt cozies from my Gadget Cozy pattern, Peas In A Pod has posted a comprehensive pattern review. She is a gift-making machine, I tell you, and it is a very detailed review. Which of course I'm thrilled to say is completely positive about the pattern! Thanks, Mama Pea!

  2. The woodland advent is so cute! how fun! I've never seen one like that. My kids have been loving their advent as well, always excited to hang the next ornament :). Thanks for linking my project, perhaps a bit of your fame will rub off on my blog ;). Hope you're enjoying December. Merry Christmas!

  3. I sorta really liked the "cripes" comment, too!

  4. Ohhh, I was in need of a craft-inspiration for this Christmas, and I found it with the Katie's calendar. My English didnt allow me to translate 'cripes', but by free association i tell you - they're cuuuute! Kiisses

  5. Hey, everybody. Grandma G, your comment about cripes got me wondering about the origins. I always considered it a funny old saying and to my utter chagrin it is of course a euphemism for Christ. Why are all the funny old expressions always stinkety euphemisms for the Lord's name? I need to start some new ones. Got any ideas?

  7. We also like Playmobil very much and so do the kids. This year our tall girl put the "Christmmas market" on her wishlist and the little man a helicopter... I like the creativity which comes along while playing with it - and as you said, we grew up with it (although we only had Horses, Cowboys and native Americans).

    Have a great season,

    Nina

  9. Gah, I just saw this same playmobile set TODAY and wished it was November 30th instead of December 15th so we could really use it. (even though my kids are a tad young this year, so I picked it up for next.) They also have a very girly designed advent, not at all christmasy, (bummer) but I think it was like a forest, with fairies and unicorns, maybe you could score that one after Christmas for a discount for next year.

  13. I'm stealing the Playmobil advent idea for next year. Love that! We didn't do the advent thing this year, just made a gingerbread house together. This week, though, has been promised to be full of crafting, board games and other nonstop kid-centric activities.
