Finally. Finally. Began cutting pieces for the twin duvet cover for my kid. I've been staring into space, staring at fabric, staring at flickr groups, staring at quilt books for so long. It felt good to cut something already.
The fabrics you see above are Anna Griffin Isabelle and Jennifer Paganelli Casey Scroll, which I'm going to combine with hopefully a pleasing result. I tried to buy enough should I get super crazy and decide to do a second cover for the other kid. We shall see. It's going to have to be a rousing success on the first one before I'd consider that.
I've settled on this (hopefully) simple chevron pattern that I whipped up in Illustrator, so what I'm cutting out is a bunch of triangles. The white triangles will all be the lighter prints, and the darker triangles will be the bright, saturated prints.
Wish me luck. My first large scale patchwork anything.
LATE NOTE: In true manic Larissa form, I've got almost all the triangles cut and... I hate it. Now I'm seriously thinking I'll turn the design into pinwheels with a white background. See, this is how a project that I originally thought would take a few hours (oh, I'll sew some big squares together, no big deal) snowballs into a project that will suck the life out of me for weeks.

I do that all the time, much to the annoyance of h2b but it's more of a hobby than a need for something so I don't see it as that bad :)

I love the zig-zag design, and the fabrics you've chosen. It's too late for this project, but if you ever want to use that design again, I highly recommend this tutorial at the Purl Bee:

It is the easiest zig-zag pattern I've ever seen, no cutting triangles, just squares. I made it as a baby quilt in rainbow colors and it was very easy.

Thanks for the supportive comments for my crazy self. I've given myself a good talking too and swung back to the chevron pattern. I decided to pair only the bright colors with white and to save the lighter triangles for some other project. Maybe someone I know will have a girl and I can make them a baby quilt or something.
ReplyDeleteRobyn, I figure, I can sew all the squares, lay it out, then if I still hate it I can always chop them in quarters and do the pinwheel thing if I get desperate. Trying not to stress over it. And now, I'm going to go sew.
You are a woman after my own heart. I'm a pinwheel girl myself, so if you give up on Mr Chevron and go that way, be sure to share the pattern. I have to kid sharing a room and two quilts I need to make. Pinwheels sound perfect!

ReplyDeleteDanielle, sorry for the late answer. I have two candy striped curtain panels I bought from IKEA a while back that I didn't use. They will have a second life as the back of the duvet cover. I can reverse it at Christmas for the candy cane look. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be great with those wonderful fabrics. I didn't realize you hadn't done large-scale patchwork before. I've made my share of queen and king sized quilts. You'll do great. It's the same as the smaller stuff...just more of it! It gets heavier when you put it together and harder to manage through the machine (because it pulls a little). I know you'll do just fine. You are amazing!
ReplyDeleteI am working on a similar quilt and had that same moment of hesitation after I'd cut all of the triangles. A moment of hesitation that's lasted over a month while the fabric sits in a box. :) Let us know how it all turns out!
