drummer drumming and gray hair graying

What are you up to? I'm prototyping Mr Drumming Drummer, pattern number 9 in my Twelve Days Series. The process is stalled at the moment because we are in the middle of high school play rehearsals and all the busyness that comes with volunteering for the production.

Seems like school is taking most of my time these days. Like seven days a week. Home schooling for 7th and 9th grades is no joke, folks. Honestly, some days I want to crawl inside a pillow fort and barricade myself in with my coffee. Also I might need to ship my 12 year old to Siberia before Pre-Algebra is over. Love her but. Math. It seems unfair that during a time when teen girls usually have irrational hostility toward their innocent, well-meaning moms that I also have to be the target for school teacher hostility. Double dose. This too shall pass...This too shall pass...when they are twenty they'll LOVE ME.

Also I'm growing hair. Going Gray update! Here's where I am these days. Remember my tiny gray sideburns from December? I went for the all-over highlights that soften the line between my true gray roots and my dyed hair. I went to two different appointments a few weeks apart and both times clearly asked for GRAY highlights but I am still blonde. Blonde does not work well with my coloring.

I'll deal. It's not forever.

Also, new hair color problems:
1) Beloved wardrobe items that don't work well with my blonde/gray. Like the unfortunate sweater I'm wearing in the photo^. Clash-o-rama. I'm learning.
2) Startling acquaintances that have not seen me for a couple months. I keep forgetting I look a lot different than I used to. There's a few seconds lag there where they are mentally sorting it and telling themselves not to blurt out something about my hair.

My selfie skills leave a lot to be desired. I haven't figured out how to make myself look like Elle MacPherson. Puzzling. Anyhow, here's the back. It's darker behind. I have more gray up front. Actually these are not really showing the true level of gray, so here's an extreme closeup:

Now you have the full picture. About an inch and half or so of real gray followed by blonde. Can you see the tonal difference? I'm still holding firm to my resolve. I am LOVING not having to constantly worry about root camouflage. Loooooviinnnnng. Picture Julie Andrews on top of the alpine mountain singing for joy. That's me!

  3. If you can homeschool your kids, going gray should be easy in comparison! Best decision I've made in recent years, maintenance time is now *0*.... although that wardrobe/color adjustment took me by surprise.
I came over from IG, love that you're blogging about this, (I didn't have an easy time transitioning) your hair looks fabulous!

  4. Haha - I'm still waiting for my 22 year old daughter to cease hostilities. "This too shall pass" has been my mantra for 2 decades! (Wouldn't change a thing). The hair looks fabulous - really suits you. Very much looking forward to the release of the Drummer Drumming. In fact my husband is so impressed with your first 8 designs, he regularly asks if any new patterns are available. Knowing how busy you are, especially home-schooling your girls, I await the final patterns eagerly, but with uncharacteristic patience.

  6. Many 12-year-old's have hostility towards most anyone! I used to teach middle school and got so burnt out from those attitudes...no wonder I have a head of gray! Your grays are looking gray-t! I'm still thinking about jumping on board with this idea.

    1. haha, Kathy, you are right, maybe it's being 12 that is the problem. God bless you for teaching middle school. It ain't for the faint of heart. Good luck with your grays!

  7. you hair looks great, but yeah, when people see you that know you.... they of course do wonder.
Blame it on the hairdresser, I fully encourage that.
    Your drummer looks good.
Your daughters.... BTDT. I am a gramma now. My oldest has a 2 year old and my youngest is due with her first in August.
Stay healthy Larissa, and one day you will sit back and laugh. Both of my daughters live very close by, so we are blessed, as I am taking care of my 93 year old daddy now. Life. Family. Hilarious

  9. 1) I think your transition hair looks great. Really. But, 2) I do know what you mean about having to adjust to a new tone - I just went MUCH darker to match my roots on top and left the front light (white) with some mid tone highlights and an ashy toner all over because my natural color is way less golden than my hair has been for, oh, YEARS. Huge adjustment. I feel like it looks green, but everyone assures me I'm crazy. (They're lying, aren't they? I need you!) The effort to grow old gracefully and with much less maintenance will be worth it in the end...right?! Stay strong, compadre.

  11. Hey Larissa, love what you're doing! I went from natural black to dark brown, red, blonde, white, back to black, then decided enough! and had my hairdresser streak my hair with silver highlights. LOVED IT! It took about a year to grown out with a few extra haircuts in between but now it's a silver white and looks fabulous. So natural and healthy!

As far as daughters, mine will be 30 tomorrow and she still rides that roller coaster. Being wiser now, instead of riding with her I simply watch from below. ha!

You'll get thru don't fret, it's just life!

  12. I think your hair looks nice - the softer color really suits your coloring - I guess there's fine-tuning to be done in terms of tone but think it looks great!

    1. Thank you, Maggie! :-) I tried the purple shampoo as others recommended and not sure it made a difference. Good news is, every day I have more of the natural color I want!

  13. I love your gray! I stopped coloring in October and got lowlights to soften the transition too. Was in the chair for 4 hours! When done the stylist said "that's exactly how I wanted it to look, it's perfect!" Well, it's not how I wanted it to look but it's good enough. I keep waiting for someone to tell me I'm "brave" lol. Not coloring has been awesome! Yours looks fabulous!

    1. Thank you, Kim! Haha! I was in the chair for 4 hours TWICE and still came away with something different than I asked for. LOL. But yes, not coloring is so completely FANTASTIC, right? *chest bump* *kermit arms*
