not even a mouse: prototype - year is in, chip is out

More prototype photos. I've found a placement for the year that I like the best – on the cup bottom where the maker's mark would be. Because the ornament hangs from the front rim edge at a slight angle, the cup bottom is at the back of the ornament.

The chip – meh. I don't think it adds much to the finished look, it's a pain to manage across the three sewn layers of the cup, and it seems to cause the cup rim to pull out of round. Three strikes – it's out. Maybe an optional embroidered crack instead.

I do like the embroidered ticking stripes on the pillow, but I'm going to try another version with more. Side Sleeper Mouse is the winner! But not happy with Mouse yet because eight year old inner Larissa insists that he can be removed from the blanket (because fun) and therefore he needs optional tiny arms and legs and a wee tail and the blanket needs to be secured somehow for easy in and out.

I envision small fingers tucking Mouse in bed with Teddy on the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature should be stirring, not even a mouse. A fun tradition to do on Christmas Eve?

But of course if your inner 40 year old says NO way to that because you don't wish for carefully handsewn Mouse to go MIA every year, you may certainly glue him and Teddy in place.

Several have mentioned a tiny tiny stocking, and you may be unsurprised to know that one had already been included in the pattern for trying out on the previous round. So far I haven't gotten to try the stocking because I'm still working out the bigger stuff. It may go the way of the chip. LOL

maybe a chip in the cup?

This teacup in progress will have a chip in it. If I like the chip I'll make it an option in the pattern. Little known fact: House mice are commonly known to repurpose your discarded china cups as their tiny little beds. Actually, that is not a little known fact nor a generally known fact because I just made it up, but it sounds true.

The chip is part of another round of revisions and samples I'm making as I fine-tune all of the pattern pieces. I think I like this teacup embroidery pattern better than the previous coral pink cup (see earlier post), but I'll wait to see how it all looks sewn together. I can't believe I forgot to include the year on the cup somewhere. Doh! I'll have to work that in somehow. More photos to come!

This Not Even A Mouse pattern is the upcoming 5th pattern in my 'Twas The Night ornament series.

not even a mouse: prototype

Couple of prototype photos of my new 'Twas The Night pattern in development: Not Even A Mouse!

This sample is by no means final, as I'm still experimenting with details. Cheese wedge was a fail. Not included. Teddy bear was lifted directly from my Wee Mouse pattern and it will be included for sure. I think the side sleeper mouse looks so cozy and snuggled in, so he will probably be the final mouse rather than back sleeper mouse. (But I find back sleeper mouse pretty charming and wanted to do another round of changes on him later, maybe a one-off ornament. Cute little guy with his stumpy legs. Needs fattening up though, bless him. And arms.)

The felt pillow is currently too small. I love the cotton ticking pillow from my Wee Mouse pattern, but I don't want to oblige you to buy special fabric for a less-than-2-inch pillow, so I'm trying a hand embroidered ticking stripe. I'm not currently happy with the embroidery designs on the cup or blanket, and blanket isn't the right size yet...Blah blah blah and about 50 more details I'm dithering about. On we go!

LodeStar Tree Topper pattern is now available!

‘Lodestar' means guiding star. This hand sewn, sparkly, heirloom wool felt Christmas star is a lovely way to top your own tree or bless someone with an impressive handmade gift. I was inspired to design it because of my own fruitless search for the perfect star for my tree. If you are like me and do not love the useless cones attached to retail stars, you will love this pattern. The LodeStar lollipop stick is very easy to attach to your tree with pipe cleaners or zip ties, and will stay straight! Yay!

The skills needed for this pattern are not advanced, it just takes patience. If you can sew basic hand stitches (whipstitch and backstitch), cut shapes with precision, and work with seed beads and sequins, then you can make this project and make it well. I've even included dashes on the embroidery lines so you don't have to guess at stitch lengths (but you can certainly set you own lengths if you'd like).

The secret to making this project easily and accurately is Sulky Stick 'n Stitch, which is a wash away printable stabilizer. Just print my pattern in on the stabilizer, peel and stick it to the felt, and stitch right on the lines. So awesome.

The Lodestar Tree Topper pattern includes two secondary ray styles (single-point and fancier triple-point) and options to make pendant, ornaments, mini ornaments, mini tree topper, garland, and an 'easy button' version of the topper. Basically, you can bedeck your world with sparkly Christmas stars.

All samples shown were made with Benzie Design wool blend and wool metallic/glitter felts. (They also have a lovely new selection of 5 mm and 8 mm sequins in really great mixed colors for you to check out. So shiny!)

Other materials you need to make a topper are a 12-inch 3/16 dowel, paint, floss, thread, seed beads, sequins, Sulky Stick 'n Stitch, Fabri-Tac glue, and Pellon 70 Peltex. That's not a complete list, but those are the highlights. Check the Etsy listing for more details.

Happy sewing! :-)

two new lodestar samples done, two more to go

Two more final Lodestar Tree Topper samples completed, with probably two more to go. I need to make at least one pendant version to show you, and I think I may do that one as a simplified star, without the embroidery.

I'm working on edits to the PDF pattern instructions on the fly. Progress is slow but steady, y'all!

Lodestar ornaments

The upcoming Lodestar Tree Topper pattern will include a few variations, like the Christmas ornaments you see here. Out of this one pattern you will be able to make a fancy tree topper, window pendant, garland, ornaments, mini tree topper, and mini ornaments.

I forgot to post this photo to my blog, which shows the very poinsettia-like red tree topper with the fancy new alternate 3 point rays in place. Those are also included as an option in the pattern, or you can use the original 1 point rays.

It's still going to be a while until I can release the pattern, but it's going well. I have written and illustrated the first draft, and am now making final samples and edits. The sample making will only take 1000 years. LOL Fewer if I have more coffee. It's slow stitching, y'all.

Lodestar Tree Topper 2.0 and still revising

Here are the two samples of upcoming pattern #lodestartreetopper I’ve made so far. The second prototype is the pink/white one on the right. Hard to tell by looking, but I made a bunch of minor adjustments, changed the construction to be better, and made it slightly larger overall.

hmmmmm I don’t know about that pink/red color scheme though. Something about the red stitching in the arms bothers me — they look like a circulatory system or something? LOL I may rethink the embroidery colors for the final pink version.

What I do love on both prototypes are the pretty metallic felts from @benziedesign. They add holiday *glimmer.* I have to take a break for a couple of weeks to do other stuff but then I’ll be back with the next version. Which will hopefully be the final version. And then the real work begins to make the samples, write the instructions, draw the diagrams, etc...
More experimental color combos coming up!

lodestar tree topper prototype

New design underway for a tree topper! I like how it's coming together so far. It's not complicated to make, but it sure takes a while. There are lots of pieces and lots of stitching, y'all.

It will have the same 3D layered star design on both sides so it can be viewed from either direction. (Or you can skip the back side if your tree is always against the wall. That's the lovely part of DIY.) Where's the cone, you say? I don't like dealing with those, as they never seem to work well or stay straight. This one will have a 3/16" wood dowel instead (painted to match your tree). So it will be like a star lollipop which will be secured to the tree top with your choice of pipe cleaners or zip ties and the dowel will disappear under the needles against the trunk. Easier to secure and straighten, IMO.

This design has been living in my head for a good long while, so it's nice to let it out. Lodestar means guiding star. I think it will be a nice topper for any sort of tree, because you can make it however you like in whatever colors you like, with stitching or no stitching, sparkle or sans sparkle.

I have a few adjustments to make for the next sample, but this version is fairly close. Materials needed are wool felts (any combo of regular, metallic, or glittered), flosses, sequins, glass beads, Pellon 70 Peltex or stiffened craft felt, FabriTac glue, matching threads, 3/16 wood dowel, and paint which matches your tree color. Lots of frothy coffee, chocolate, and a nice long dialog heavy mini series you've been meaning to watch are recommended.

All Through the House – new surprise inside

Original and Gingerbread versions are included.
Here's a peek at the new Santa surprise inside the gingerbread house.

Three difficulty levels are included:
Harder (curvy shingles/round gable window), Easier (angled shingles, rectangle gable window) and easiest option of all – omit the interior altogether for a faster and still adorable result! Combine the style/difficulty options in any combination.

Hey guys! You might have been wondering why I've dropped off the SM planet. It's been a tough time healthwise for me and my family (several issues, won't bore you) and also with some good but time-consuming life events thrown in. I'm still working when I can.

I've revised the pattern a number of times because I'm a crazy person and cannot help myself. After a frankly ridiculous number of hours and many reject samples, I'm now in the final stages/samples of the All Through the House pattern (number 4 in my 'Twas the Night series), which includes three difficulty levels for you (harder, easier, and easiest) and also two styles: Original and Gingerbread, which you see in the photos above.

NEW REVEAL shown: There's now a tiny Santa option inside the gingerbread house. I was really wrestling with that for a while trying to make it charming and still doable, and am so happy with result. Eeeeee! Cute meter pegged. My inner 8 year old Larissa is so delighted with him. I'll update you guys when the pattern is ready for release. I hope you are all doing well!

All Through the House *Easier Version*

Happy belated Easter! I was enjoying the beautiful day so much on Sunday I never posted my wishes to you. I hope your day was filled with joy and peace and chocolate bunnies. Our Easter gathering was combined with two family birthdays, so it was extra nice! Yes, I'm still here plugging away at this pattern whenever I can! It has been really challenging to find the time. What you see here is the *easier version* of the All Through the House ornament, which is the upcoming pattern in my 'Twas the Night ornament series.

What makes it easier, you say? The 1) rectangle gable window as opposed to round and 2) the straight cut shingles as opposed to scalloped. When in doubt, try this easier version first, then try the harder one next. Of course, you can also opt to make this even easier by forgoing the inside altogether and keeping the door ornamental instead of functional. That's totally allowed and cuts out a good many steps!

A peek inside the door, featuring the *new and improved* felt Christmas tree as the surprise inside. And if you look closely, you'll see a string of Christmas lights decking the halls behind it.

This version is made using the Benzie Design Retro palette for my 'Twas the Night series. If you already have that felt palette, you can make this green/mint/pink house by purchasing some pink stiffened felt and mint colored card stock (along with the other non-felt materials needed).

These two photos are for size reference. I sized the All Through the House ornaments to fit in nicely with the rest of the series, and as you can see, they are a just a bit shorter than the Mrs Claus ornament.

Back to work for me. <3

eureka! tiny Christmas tree

Finally! Loving this 1.5 inch felt tree waaay better for inside the house than the twisted pipe cleaner version from my earlier prototype. Easy to construct as well, and has a lot better visual payoff when you open the little tiny door. *sigh of relief as another detail locks into place in brain*

I'm banging away at this All Through The House pattern y'all, but between 1) the easier version 2) the harder version and the 3) gingerbread version there are one gagillion details to streamline for your crafting pleasure. It's only taking forever, but will be worth it. (hopefully LOL)

Also thrown in the mix are all the deadlines and special things you do with a graduating senior as events ramp up. Yes. My last baby, Thing 2, graduates in May. Wasn't this just yesterday though?

Another All Through the House preview

Hey Mmmakers! Another quick All Through The House pattern preview for you. It's the upcoming new pattern in my 'Twas the Night ornaments. (You can also see a short 20 sec video on my Facebook or IG feeds). See this post for the link to an earlier preview video which shows the surprise inside the blue house.

I just have no choice but to include a gingerbread variation in this upcoming pattern. No choice NOT to make tiny glitter bedecked pink shingles, gumdrops, candy canes and a little surprise inside (still working on that part, not happy with the latest). I love sparkle-ing ALL the tiny things with glitter! But y'all. Glitter gets everywhere. When I'm 1000 showers past my final house sample someone will say to me "Hey, do you know you have some glitter in your ear?"

If you plan on making this one, be sure to have Fabri-Tac glue on hand as well as the trusty ol' Aleene's Tacky Glue. The gingerbread variation shown here includes the Benzie Design Bellwether glitter felts in white and pink. Also the actual gingerbready color is their Nutmeg wool-blend, which is not included in the usual 'Twas the Night color palettes, so you will have to buy that separately if you'd like an authentic cookie color. I was also eyeing their Cinnamon pretty hard for that, and I think it would also work really well if it's already in your stash.

If the tiny detail on this ornament is making you a bit nervous, I can assure you this intermediate level pattern will be similar in difficulty to my other intermediate level ornaments ('Twas the Night and Ebenezer). I will include some harder/easier options for a few of the details, and also of course the usual VERY detailed step by step instructions. :-)

This pattern is still in development, but other patterns in this series (and lots more) are available in my Etsy shop: mmmcrafts.etsy.com

sneak peek of All Through the House

Sneak peek of All Through the House, the upcoming 4th pattern in my hand-sewn wool felt 'Twas the Night Ornament Series. This is a fairly tight prototype, shown here in the Benzie Design Classic felt palette. It's made with the usual wool felts, flosses, sequins, beads and stiffened felts. Also thrown in there are iridescent/metallic chenille stems, card stocks, and *glitter*.

There's a little surprise inside. Eee! Tiny things are fun. To see, have a look at the preview video on my Facebook page or my Instagram feed.
